City of Carlton
I hope this update finds the residents of Carlton weathering the economic storm and doing as well as possible under the circumstances. I imagine there are a number of folks who either are unemployed or under employed. Both of my sons are still unemployed, so I do understand. I have been told that things are beginning to look up a little in the real estate business, which I hope will translate into jobs.
Carlton is still a great little town and a wonderful place to live. We are fortunate that most of the businesses in town are still with us. Many businesses in other communities have not been as lucky.
Water & Sewer Departments
The City has borrowed money to start an aggressive sewer line repair project this year. At this point, I do not know which lines are to be repaired, however our City Engineers and Public Works crew will chose those sewer lines most in need.
We have applied to the Federal government for a grant to replace our water main from the treated reservoir to town. If awarded, this will increase the pressure of the water flow allowing us to meet state mandated fire flow levels. This should encourage some additional growth in our industrial area and possibly even downtown.
Fire District
The Fire District has nearly completed the new, main Fire Hall and should be moving in soon. It has been a long time in the works and I am sure the fire fighters will greatly appreciate having a new fire hall and bigger, better work area.
Parks
The parks in town are doing well, having made it through another wet and windy winter. The Carlton Business Association has worked with Carlton City Council and the Lakota Group from Illinois to update the upper park. The Lakota Group has come up with a tentative design, created with input from some residents and the council. They will apply for grants and hope to receive enough money to build a new pool house with public, year round restrooms.
Festivals
One of the best reasons to live in Carlton is our festivals. Carlton Fun Days will sponsor the parade and then move to the lower park for the fun and games. Fun Days will again be the fourth Saturday in June (June 26th). We are looking for volunteers to help us. We meet monthly until closer to June, then twice a month. Volunteering is a great way to get to know your neighbors and make new friends.
The Carlton A Walk in the Park is our other festival. Walk in the Park is scheduled for Saturday, July 31st and Sunday, August 1st, exclusively in the lower park. Typically, there are numerous artists, fine cuisine, many wineries offering tasting and a beer garden. Proceeds from this event are given via grants to local non-profit groups in the community.
